Since the start of 2021 we have noticed a boost of popularity in scalp micropigmentation. But what is it and how does it work? I’m going to answer some common questions that we often get asked regarding scalp micro pigmentation and the available different kinds.

What is it?

Scalp micro pigmentation is a type of cosmetic tattooing that simulates hair density or growth on the scalp. Semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing pigment is applied into the dermis using a cosmetic tattoo device. It is a popular solution to disguise hair loss for both men and women.

Is it the same as a body tattoo?

No. Scalp micro pigmentation is semi-permanent like all forms of cosmetic tattooing. The pigment that is used is specially designed to fade over time and the pigment is implanted more superficial than traditional body tattoos.

How long does it last?

The results last up to 24 months but may need reapplication earlier as the pigment fades. The lifetime of the pigment depends on the client’s lifestyle habits and their body’s lymphatic system. If the client exposes the area to unprotected UV rays regularly, the results will fade faster.

Who can have it done?

Scalp micro pigmentation is ideal for both men and women who are experiencing hair loss as a result of: hormonal changes or PCOS, alopecia, a genetic predisposition for hair loss.

Types of Scalp Micropigmentation

There is more than one style of scalp micro pigmentation depending on the client and the desired effect.

The most commonly known and most popular form of scalp tattooing is the shaved effect.

This is where a single nanoneedle is used to mimic hair follicles on the scalp, creating the appearance of closely shaved hair. This style is most popular for men who have a receding hairline or bald patches that are bothering them. It can also be used to camouflage scars on the scalp that are a result of previous trauma from surgery, hair transplantation, or other kinds of injury.

The second most common type of scalp micro pigmentation is known as the density effect. This is more popular with women and men who have their natural hairline still but are experiencing hair thinning. The density effect uses a larger needle to apply a denser colour coverage.

What is the Downtime?

The area will be tender for 2-3 days following the treatment however this is usually not too bothersome and should not stop the client from returning to work. It is important to protect the area from direct sun exposure during the healing process as well as avoid public pools, saunas, and taking long hot showers.

How much does it cost?

Treatment prices will vary depending on your location, the equipment used, and the artist’s experience. Prices generally start from $3,500 and can be as much as $5,000.

How Long does it take?

The duration of the treatment depends on the area of coverage needed. Sometimes it may be necessary to perform the treatment in multiple sittings, spaced a few weeks apart to allow time for your body to recover and heal between sessions. This also allows the artist to build the density gradually and see how your skin heals from the initial application before continuing the treatment process.

Who can learn to perform scalp micro pigmentation?
